Footnotes

  • Thomas Vere Hodgson (1864-1926) was the Discovery Expedition's marine biologist. He was responsible for the first descriptions of Antarctica's deep sea floor and produced numerous studies of the flora and fauna of the sea near winter quarters, one of which, "Polar Biology," features in The South Polar Times (see lot XXX). Prior to the expedition Hodgson worked for the Marine Biological Station in Plymouth where he met, and struck up a close friendship with, Alice 'Elsie' Sexton, a celebrated marine artist and zoologist who went on to become a Fellow of the Geographical Society. Cape Hodgson (the northernmost point of Black Island in the Ross Archipelago) was named after him. See illustration at page 41.
