The Voyage of the 'Discovery', 2 vol., FIRST EDITION, AUTHOR'S PRESENTATION COPY inscribed "To Miss Eleanor Warrender with the authors best wishes RF. Scott, Oct. 12th 1905", photogravure frontispieces, numerous maps and plates (including 12 coloured reproductions after Dr. Wilson), a folding map in pocket at the end of each volume, with the extra slip, some spotting in places, publisher's blue cloth with gilt 'medallions' on sides, spines slightly faded and soiled [Conrad, p.121; Rosove 286; Spence 1051; Taurus 41], 8vo (245 x 170mm.), Smith Elder, 1905

  • A PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED ON THE DAY OF PUBLICATION of "the ablest and most interesting record of travel to which the present century has yet given birth" (The Spectator, 14 October, 1914, quoted in Scott Journals. Scott's Last Expedition, 2005, edited by Max Jones, p.xxiv). The Warrender family were friends of the Churchills, Eleanor being a particular associate of Winston's mother Jennie, with whom she served as a nurse on a hospital ship during the Boer War.
