  • Louis Bernacchi (1876-1942), raised in Tasmania, was the physicist on the Discovery, having had previous experience of the Antarctic on Borchgrevink's Southern Cross expedition in 1898. Drawing on his diaries and memories Bernacchi's account is upbeat - "She was a Happy Ship, and at the end of it all we were left with a sense of achievement - a sense of fulfilment".
