Footnotes

  • Fanning owned several whaling and sealing ships, basing this work on the reports of his crews who had explored the South Shetlands and other Antarctic islands, in search of new sources of furs and oil. Included is an account of the first United States naval exploring expedition to the southern seas in 1829-30, commanded by Benjamin Pendleton. The book was extremely popular and immediately sold out (Rosove). See illustration overleaf.
