Footnotes

  • A short, but well-illustrated, account of nine visits made by Christensen (1884-1965) to Antarctica, five of which were made "for the purpose of solving scientific and geographical problems". These were the Odd I expedition of 1926-1927, and the four Norvegia expeditions undertaken between 1927 and 1931. He was a pioneer in the use of aerial surveying with seaplanes in the mapping of the coast of East Antarctica. In 1913 Christensen had sold the whaler Endurance to Shackleton.

Provenance: W. L.S. Fleming, of British Graham Land Expedition (with ownership inscription); Martin L. Greene (Seattle) from Henry Sotheran Limited (2000).
