Footnotes

  • Only one or two of these images appear to be in the SPRI collection, where the visit to Tristan is poorly represented. The lot includes a number of family groups (as well as the ceremony of presenting a colour to the scout troop), by the Australian George Hubert Wilkins (1888-1958), the future polar aviator, who served as the expedition's naturalist and cinematographer. An account of the Quest's visit to Tristan, and the adjacent islands is given by Rose Rogers, wife of a newly arrived missionary in The Lonely lsland (1926), pp. 60-75. "I spent part of the day going round with Mr. G.H. Wilkins, the Quest naturalist, who was also its photographer, and he kindly took photographs of every family on the island and promised to send each a copy and a set to me". See illustration at page 167.
