Footnotes

  • An important group from several cameras. The official photographer was John Charles Bee-Mason, whose work included Quest at sea with various members of the expedition. However, Mason suffered horribly from sea-sickness and left the expedition at Madeira, following which his duties were taken up by Hubert Wilkins who covered South Georgia, Gritviken and whaling operations there; views of Quest in pack ice, bergs, members of the expedition surveying on the ice. The image of Shackleton's grave shortly after internment and before the expedition returned to South Georgia to erect the cairn, is not by Wilkins and seems to be very rare. See illustration overleaf.
