Footnotes

  • Inscribed by Shackleton, whilst on the Cunard liner S.S. Aquitania, to a fellow traveller, the "Shellback" of the inscription referring to experienced sailors who has crossed the equator. Incidentally "Shellback" was also the pseudonym used by Frank Wild for his contributions to "Aurora Australis". In the opening chapter of South Shackleton notes that whilst in the Weddell Sea he saw an iceberg that "had a natural dock that would have contained the Aquitania". See illustration overleaf.
