Footnotes

  • Shackleton's epic story of leadership and survival is simply titled South; it was delivered to the public in an unpretentious publication printed on inferior paper at the end of the Great War. There was no elaborate limited edition of this book, but the story of the sinking of Endurance, the journey to Elephant Island over ice and water, and rescue of all 28 men by Shackleton after a dramatic open boat journey and climb over South Georgia Island has become the best known story in the Antarctic literature. Hurley's wonderful photography is an additional bonus for the reader.

Provenance: Martin L. Greene (Seattle) from Jean Marie Parmer (San Diego specialist in Polar books, d. 2009).
