Lot Details
Argonauts of the South. Being a Narrative of Voyagings and Polar Seas and Adventures in the Antarctic with Sir Douglas Mawson and Sir Ernest Shackleton, first edition, frontispiece and 46 plates (with 76 illustrations, mostly photographic), 2 folding maps, photographic endpapers, publisher's cloth, t.e.g., very slightly rubbed but a good copy [Conrad, p.205; Renard 768; Rosove 178.A1; Spence 615; OCLC 1346057], 8vo (240 x 166mm.), New York, Putnam's, 1925

  • Argonauts of the South, liberally illustrated with photographs by Hurley - described by Rosove "as one of the great Antarctic photographers of all time" - gives an account of Mawson's Australasian Antarctic Expedition (1911-14), and Shackleton's Endurance expedition, 1914-16, on both of which Hurley served. The story of his saving his negative photographic plates from the sinking Endurance, and preserving only selected plates until they could return to civilization, is well known. Many of his best known images are present in this book.

Provenance: Martin L. Greene (Seattle) from Bob Finch (High Latitude).
