  • A pioneering whaling expedition to the Weddell Sea, Falkland and South Sandwich Islands, considered to mark the commencement of the "Heroic Age" of Antarctic exploration. The Royal and Meteorological Societies subscribed instruments to the expedition, and some scientific work was carried out in the Joinville Island group and northern Trinity Peninsula. Murdoch was the expedition artist.
