    Mawson, previously a member of Shackleton's Nimrod Expedition, was the leader of Australian Antarctic Expedition, 1911-1914 which at a presentation at the Royal Geographical Society on its return "was lauded as the greatest scientific expedition yet conducted in Antarctica" (Howgego).
