Being the Story of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, 1911-1914, 2 vol., FIRST EDITION, AUTHOR'S PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed, signed and dated ("June, 1915") in both volumes to Frederick George Masters , the first "... with kindest regards and pleasant recollections of the circumstances of our last meeting", half-titles, photogravure frontispiece, 20 colour plates, over 270 photographic illustrations (mostly by Frank Hurley, 2 folding, several double-page), maps and plans, 3 colour-printed maps in pocket (as issued) at end of volume 2, illustrations in the text, one colour plate in volume one loose with edges frayed, 2 newspaper clippings inserted with some offsetting, later inscription of Alice Todd Masters (daughter of Frederick and Maude Todd) on front free endpapers, publisher's pictorial blue cloth gilt, upper covers with gilt-blocked illustration "Leaning into the wind", slighty rubbed, small stab mark on lower cover of volume 2 [Conrad, p.208; Renard 1021; Rosove 217.A1.a; Spence 774; OCLC 3009654], 8vo (250 x 181mm.), William Heinemann, [1915]

  • PRESENTATION COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, inscribed in both volumes by the author to the Rev. Frederick G. Masters "with pleasant recollections of the circumstances of our last meeting", the event being Mawson's marriage to Francisca Delprat on 31 March 1914 at the Holy Trinity Church, Balaclava where Masters officiated. The Melbourne Punch (2 April 1914) described it as "a wedding such as may never happen again in the annals of Victorian history... all the ushers were members of the Mawson Expedition [Captain John Davis acting as best man] with the exception of the last-named, who was a member of the Scott Expedition... two large models of the Aurora were on either side of the wonderful wedding cake, the latter surmounted by an iceberg and models of sleigh dogs". Masters was a friend and neighbour of the Delprat family who lived in the Windsor, adjacent to Balaclava, south east of Melbourne, Victoria.
