Footnotes

  • First trade edition, with the presentation stamp of Captain Alfred Kling, initially watch-officer and later captain of Filchner's ship Deutschland. Kling had relatives in Minnesota and probably sent this book to them from Germany.

Filchner launched a scientific expedition to the Antarctic in 1911, travelling south from South Georgia into the Weddell Sea. The Deutschland was trapped in the ice in early 1912, the same fate as happened to the previous German expedition, and Shackleton's Endurance three years later.

Provenance: W. Heynacker, Minneapolis (with original note of purchase, Berlin, 1923, seemingly a gift from Alfred Kling); Martin L. Greene (Seattle) from Bob Finch (High Latitude), 1998.
