Footnotes

  • "ALWAYS ANXIOUS! NO GOOD!". A FINE ASSOCATION COPY, belonging to the grieving mother of Captain Oates. She was, privately, a fierce critic of Scott.

Passages underlined or marked are all in Volume I (derived from Scott's Diary), often those mentioning Oates or the ponies in his charge (the names of several of these added in the margin), their sufferings, as well as those of the dogs. Other passages are ones selected to indicate a negative aspect in Scott.

In an early passage on the voyage south, Scott speaks of the trying headwind and that coal consumption is higher than anticipated. This is marked by Caroline Oates with the addition "Always anxious! no good!". In the list of nick names Caroline Oates ascribes 'Mother' to Meares and 'Etonspride' as a further nickname for Oates.

An autograph letter signed from A. Cherry-Garrard (Lamer Park, 25 August, 1922) is pasted on the first pastedown and recalls that the famous lines from Tennyson's Ulysses 'To strive, to seek, to find and not to yield', were "put into the cross which we put up on Observation Hill. The account of this, somewhat curiously, in Scott's Last Expedition is among the voyages of the Terra Nova... I am afraid that 2nd volume was a bit of a muddle".

The blue cloth appears to be the same as used for the standard publisher's binding, but the lettering is larger and there is no publisher's name on the spine. There is nothing to say whether this is indicative of a pre-publication binding (Mrs. Oates would have been an appropriate recipient for an early copy), or a more prosaic remainder binding. See illustration overleaf.
