  • "Before setting out on his last, great journey to the South Pole, Scott... was sworn in as a New Zealand postmaster, and issued with a supply of 1d New Zealand stamps [later the 1/2d were supplied]... and the necessary post office equipment... Four mails were dispatched in all... on return to the United Kingdom the unsold balance of stamps was remaindered, mostly in the cancelled condition, for the benefit of the expedition funds..."
