Footnotes

  • A COPY OF THE NEW TESTAMENT PRESENTED TO CAPTAIN SCOTT IN DUNEDIN.

The Terra Nova docked at Port Chalmers, Dunedin on 27 November, 1910 in order to re-coal and allow Scott, Wilson and others to board, once they had arrived by train from Lyttleton. The ship departed on 29 November. It is not known if A.N. Falconer, head of the local Sailor's Mission, presented copies to all or just selected members of the crew (copies owned by George Levick, George Abbott and Oates have surfaced at auction). Captain Oates recorded a visit from the mission in his diary "I had a job helping the ship's carpenter to refit the cross tress on the foremast. It was rather amusing as a parson came up belonging to the Missions to Seamen" (Oates quoted in S. Limb and P. Cordingly, Captain Oates, Soldier and Explorer, 1982, p.165).

Provenance: Frederick.J. Hooper (1891-1955), steward and member of the Shore Party; by descent.
