SLEDGING MAP
A finely executed map showing the major physical features between Ross Island and the South Pole, ink on linen, the main features and latitudes marked in red, the route of Scott's route to the Pole (noting Shackleton and Scott's previous "farthest South" records, where the five died, etc.) added in lighter red in a later hand, the word "Barrier" and depot location "Mt. Hooper, 80.30 S.Lat." in blue, rolling into green cloth wrapper with ties, map 580 x 250mm.

Footnotes

  • Scott recorded in his diary "Hooper landed to-day, much to his joy. He got to work at once, and will be a splendid help, freeing the scientific people of all dirty work" (January 18, 1911). Scott's confidence in him was confirmed as by November he was part of the Motor Party which laid a depot ("Mount Hooper", the location noted in blue on the map). It seems probable that this "sledging map", rolled for use in a protective cloth, was used by Hooper on the depot-laying journey.

Provenance: Frederick.J. Hooper (1891-1955), steward and member of the Shore Party; by descent.
