Footnotes

  • One of Debenham's "most significant contributions to the work of the expedition... was his expertise in plane-table mapping. He convinced Scott and other members of the expedition of its value not only at base camps but also on sledge journeys" (ODNB), and he used his cartographic expertise to complete these charts, still in use in the late 1950s. "His map-making skills are best displayed in this publication" (Taurus).

Provenance: Library of the University of Cape Town (withdrawn); Martin L. Greene (Seattle) from John Simper 1999.
