  • In 1822 Weddell led a two-year sealing expedition to the southern ocean, visiting the Cape Verde, South Georgia, South Orkney, South Shetland islands, and Tierra del Fuego, Montevideo, and Patagonia. During the southwards sailing they reached the lowest latitude then recorded, with the Weddell Sea now bearing his name. This copy belonged to Francis Howard Bickerton (1889-1954), who accompanied Mawson on his 1911-14 expedition. See illustration overleaf.
