Autograph manuscript of an address to "The Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce Glasgow", comprising a detailed report on trade links between Burma and Western China, with recommendations for expanding these links through the establishment of a proper boundary and increased responsibilities on the part of the King and the authorities, 32 pages, written in brown ink, with pencil additions and amendments, on loose sheets tipped onto card with tape, 4to, [c.1870]

  • A very full report including the historical background to the relationship between Burma and Western China, details and findings of the expedition to Yunnan to explore re-opening ancient trade routes (see following lot), descriptions of cities such as Talifu (the headquarters of the Mohammedan "Sultan" during the great rebellion of 1857-1873), and the influence of political and religious factors on trade and the workforce, with detailed descriptions of goods traded (such as gold and cotton).
