Captain Alex. Bowers, R.N.R., F.R.G.S. Mergui, 14th April 1887', printed tribute giving details of Bowers' achievements and final days in Burma, 4 pages, 8vo, Mergui, 1887; long letter giving news of Bowers' death and an account of his career, requesting that the Government grant an annuity to Bowers' widow and children, and giving the names of referees (including Col. Fitche and Sir Edward Sladen), 6 pages, 8vo, [1887]; and a newspaper account of Sladen's knighthood

  • This and following lots relate to 'Birdie' Bowers's father, Captain Bowers, whose career path was followed by 'Birdie'. Edward Sladen had led the Bhamo expedition, and in his day was sufficiently famous to have a Royal Indian Marine ship named after him - one in which 'Birdie' was to serve.
