A black and gold lacquer four-case inro
By Toshi (Iizuka Toyo III), 19th century
Bearing a mura-nashiji ground, lacquered with symbols of the five great festivals of Japan (Go-sekku), showing a line of shimenawa, a kabuto, a sprig of kiku blooms, poem slips, a pair of tatebina dolls and a basket of shells, in gold and slight-coloured takamakie, the interior of nashiji, signed Toshi saku with red pot seal; with porcelain ojime, enamelled and gilt in Kinrande style with a flying bat, signed Eiraku; and an ivory netsuke of a discarded basket carved with the character Ju above assorted shells, unsigned.

    The symbols showing are the shimenawa representing New Year; the tatebina dolls for the Girls' festival; the kabuto for the Boys' festival; the flowers for the Chrysanthemum festival; and the shells for the Ebisu festival.
