Bearing a rich roiro ground and lacquered with a sumptiously-clad orian seated, leaning on a kyosoku (arm rest), and unfurling her love letter whilst behind her, Daruma comes to life from a hanging kakemono, the reverse with two overlapping shikishi (poem slips), one inscribed with a kyoka poem and a small suzuribako, all in gold and coloured togidashi, the interior of rich nashiji, unsigned.

    The poem transcribes:

    ふみをよむ / 女にこゝろ / かけものゝ/ 達广は うつゝ / ぬけて 出らるゝ

    Fumio o yomu / onna ni kokoro / kakemono no / Daruma wa utsutsu / nukete deraruru

    And translates:

    Daruma coming to life from a painting
    smitten by a lady reading a letter.

    The design is taken from a double-page illustration in Ehon Tokonoyama, vol.1, by Shunchosai Takehara (active c.1772-1801). It is a parody of a kyoka poem, 'Pictures of the heart'.
