Footnotes

  • 鴉に鷺図蒔絵印籠 銘「常嘉齋」 19世紀

    Provenance: a Swedish private collection.

Published: Japanese Inro and Lacquerware from a private Swedish collection, Eskenazi Ltd., London, 1996, no.7.

The design is probably a reference to a poem by Matsuo Basho (1644-1694), composed in 1679.

    Kare-eda ni
    karasu no tomarikeri
    aki no kure

    On a withered branch
    a crow came to rest
    Autumn dusk

The poem is unusual in that it contains two extra syllables in the second line, suggesting the weight of the crow as it bends the withered branch.
