Bearing a roiro ground, after the design by Hanabusa Itcho, lacquered with two swallows wheeling in the air around furin (a wind-bell) in gold, silver and slight-coloured takamakie, inscribed Hanabusa Itcho with kao, the interior of nashiji, signed Kajikawa saku with red pot seal; with a shibuichi ojime inlaid in copper with a rinzu design.

    The motif is taken from an ehon: Wakan Meigaen, vol.6, p.15, illustrated by Ooka Shunboku, first printed in 1739, after a painting by Hanabusa Itcho.

    Ooka Shunboku (1680-1763) was a painter and illustrator, who was born in Osaka and moved to Edo, where he trained as a Kano school painter, before studying Chinese Ming and Yuan paintings, many of which were used as illustrations for his books.
