A fine boxwood netsuke of a chicken and young
By Masanao, Kyoto, late 18th century
The parent seated, protecting an egg and her head turned to preen the plumage of one chick, another clambering over her back while a third walks around at her back, forming a compact composition in slightly-worn and well-toned wood, the eyes inlaid, signed in an oval reserve Masanao.
