The former seated on a low base, its head turned and one paw raised protectively over its cub which rolls on its back at its feet, the slightly-worn ivory bearing a fine patina, unsigned.

    The jakoneko or musk cat, often called a shaggy dog, is of African origin and entered Japan via India, when it became popular for its musk, used for perfumes. The eighth shogun, Tokugawa Yoshimune, acquired several from 1724-1728 and the creature is depicted on a screen painting by Kano Eitoku (1543-1590) in the Nanzenji temple in Kyoto.
