A wood netsuke of a rat
By Masanao, Kyoto, 18th century
Seated, leaning forward, its body twisted slightly to the left as it nibbles on its hind paw which is drawn forward, while it holds its tail, curling beneath, the slightly-worn wood bears a fine patina and the eyes are inlaid, signed in an oval reserve Masanao.
4.7cm (1 7/8in).
