AINSWORTH, WILLIAM HARRISON. 1805-1882.
Autograph Manuscript and sketch for Old St. Paul's. 10 pp, rectos only, 8vo, [London, 1841]. Mild soiling and wear.
MANUSCRIPT DRAFTS AND SKETCH OF OLD ST. PAUL'S. Comprised of sections of chapters VI and VII in the novel's second book, titled "Paul's Walk" and "The Amulet," respectively, and containing numerous deletions and variations from the final text. Including a sketch (200 x 120 mm) by John Franklin for the plate titled "Leonard Holt conversing with the Masons before the Portico of Saint Pauls," appearing in chapter II of the third book, with two of the figures labeled as characters in the novel. Old St. Paul's originally ran without illustrations in the Sunday Times from January through December of 1841. Franklin was engaged to illustrate Hugh Cunningham's triple decker issue of the novel (which also appeared in 1841) after Cruikshank declined the invitation, as he was committed to other projects.
