1962 Chevrolet Impala SS Convertible
Chassis no. 21867S312832
By 1962 the Chevrolet Impala was easing away from the “bubbletop” design towards the more formal square roofline that would define 1963 and ’64. The change had actually been provoked by the roofline of the 1961 Ford Thunderbird, and Lincoln Continental and it was spreading throughout the industry – even as far as the Rambler Classic and Studebaker Hawk GT.

The Impala was still the prestige line but the Super Sport package was beginning to develop its own style. Now the $54 SS package was sold along with the $102 bucket seat option and included a center consol, spinner wheel covers, unique body moldings, fender and deck signatures and a passenger assist bar (“Hang on and shut up!”).

The Impala convertible now had a base price of $3,026 and 75,719 were built. The 409 cubic inch V8 was still the monster motor to have, and two were offered this year. The first generated 380 horsepower with a single 4-barrel carburetor and the ground-pounder 409 horsepower version with dual 4 barrels. Both had 11:1 compression ratios, so factor in premium gas. None of this came cheap, and cost buyers an extra $428 or $484, depending on how much grunt they went for, but 15,091 customers stepped up, and many went for the SS package too.

The 1962 Impala SS offered today joined the Lewis collection in 2008 from Hillsboro, but before that it was a Portland car. It is an 800-pound gorilla, with the 404/409 option, with dual 4-barrel carburetors and solid lifters and it’s backed by a 4-speed T-10 transmission.

This car received a frame-off restoration and its superb paint and panel fit is highlighted by the Rally Red finish, white vinyl top and very well fitted red vinyl interior, with the optional tachometer. The car has no power steering or brakes and rides on steel wheels with spinner caps. But the chrome and trim is brilliant, the engine compartment is immaculate, and all badges are perfect. The odometer shows 52331 miles, which is very likely original. The Oregon license plate reads “MY 409.”
