Of all the ‘57 Chevrolets that collectors desire, the pinnacle is probably the Bel Air 2-door hardtop. It was ever thus: 166,426 were sold new, three times as many as the convertible and 30,000 more buyers than fancied the brand-new 4-door hardtop. Even today it seems perfectly proportioned, while the rockets on the hood, the fluted side fins and three shields on the front fenders just seem like whimsical details to accent the basic shape.

The interior was improved by a much more focused instrument panel in front of the driver, while the attractive exterior colors, such as Canyon Coral, Tropical Turquoise, Dusk Pearl, Coronado Yellow and Sierra Gold were carried into the interior. Under the hood, the engineers had a field day with eight engine options from the 235 cubic-inch 6-cylinder to the 283 cubic-inch fuel-injected V8 capable of 283 horsepower.

This car joined the Lewis collection in 2008 and originated in California, making its way up to Washington State though a number of recorded owners and detailed paperwork. They include Phil Johnson of Oxnard, California who sold the car with 65,628 miles on it in the late 1960s to John Miller, also of Oxnard who kept it until 1974 when it registered 70,646. Subsequent owners included Nick DeScala in Tacoma (1974-79), Bob Bronsink in Port Angeles (1982-93), Earl Bostain in Kelso (1993-2003) and Larry Beebe in Portland (2003-08).

This hardtop is stunning both in its Easter Egg colors and condition. The car is superbly painted in India Ivory over Larspur Blue and was the recipient of a frame-off restoration. The panel fit is excellent, the chrome and trim are exceptional (it has the one-piece front bumper), and the turquoise vinyl and black cloth interior is correct and beautifully fitted.

The car rides on 14-inch belted white wall tires and is fitted with spinner wheel covers.

Under the hood, the engine compartment is correctly finished and spotless, with a 220-horsepower, 283 cubic-inch Super Turbo-fire V8, 4-barrel carburetor, a Powerglide transmission and dual exhausts. The car is fitted with power steering and power brakes.
The odometer shows 98,056 miles and is very likely correct, indicating many miles of happy motoring. It’s easy to see that it must have been a sad day for every one of these owners when they had to part with this superb car.
