37-factory options from new
1955 Chevrolet Bel Air Convertible
Chassis no. VC55J112495
Nowhere was the confirmation of the new '55's success more obvious than in the production of convertibles, which hit an all-time high for Chevrolet with 41,292 Bel Air ragtops being sold double the 1954 sales.
The 1955 model Chevrolets began the company's "modern classic" period, now recognized as the "Tri-Five" '55-'56-'57 series, possibly the most desirable Chevys ever.
The cars launched the immortal small-block V8 in 265 cubic-inch displacement and switched to 12-volt systems, for improved cold-weather starting.
The 1955 models features brand new sheet metal throughout and were 2.5 inches lower than the '54s, on a brand-new twist-resistant frame. There was a new ball-joint front suspension and the rear spring were 9-inches longer that provided a better ride.
The convertible offered here came to the Lewis collection in 2008 from an auction Arizona and before that, Frank Motors in Scottsbluff, Nebraska and Wagner Auto Sales, in Kansas City, Missouri.
Superbly restored in Regal Turquoise over India Ivory, it carries an astonishing 37 options, and must be about the most heavily optioned '55 convertible in existence. It's powered by the 180 horsepower, 265 cubic-inch Plus-Power package V8, with a 4-barrel carburetor, with a 2-speed Powerglide automatic transmission, and dual exhausts.
The turquoise and ivory vinyl interior is correct and well-fitted, as is the ivory vinyl power top. The paint is superb, the chrome and trim fantastic and complete. The engine compartment is exceptionally clean and correct, with under hood work light.
The list of options is extensive, starting with power brakes and power steering, with the correct generator-mounted pump and the correct supplemental oil filter. Externally, the convertible carries front and rear bumper guards, rocker moldings, door edge moldings, front fender stone guards, dual mirrors, fenders skirts, fender skirt stone guards, a continental kit, wire wheel covers, door handle guards, gas tank door guard, backup lights and windshield washers and electric wipers.
Inside this convertible is fitted with a Wonderbar radio, power windows, power seats, a traffic finder prism, tissue dispenser, glovebox light, de luxe heater, accelerator cover and cigarette lighter.
The odometer indicates 00,390 miles and the condition of the car suggests these are the only miles recorded since this painstakingly thorough restoration. From color to equipment and overall condition, discerning collectors will recognize this car as a unique opportunity.
