Footnotes

  • Provenance: Given by the artist to the current owner in 1973 while making the documentary Mr. Shepard & Mr. Milne (1976). He notes, "I directed a film that featured Ernest Shepard (and Christopher Robin Milne) where we see the artist at work aged 92. It was during the shooting of this that we uncovered the sketch that had been overlooked when Shepard gave the V&A his working Pooh drawings. This is when he signed it in biro [ballpoint pen] and gave it to me as a memento of our work together."

An unusually sensitive study of a great tree in the Hundred Acre Wood as Pooh and Piglet search for Owl on a blustery Thursday. The artist loosely sketched in the positioning of the two beloved characters in the foreground.
