Footnotes

  • Provenance: Sporting Gallery, 1928.

In this lively vignette, Shepard emphasizes that Roo is just a baby by placing him in a high chair, a detail not indicated in Milne's text. The original Roo was eventually lost in an apple orchard by Cotchard Farm, Milne's property near Ashdown Forest, Hartfield, East Sussex. All of the other toys that Milne used as models for his famous characters are now on display in Central Children's Room, The New York Public Library.
