Arthur Rackham (British, 1867-1939)
Barrie, J.M. Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens. London: Hodder and Stoughton, [n.d.]. Illustrated with 24 color plates by Rackham. 8vo (208 x 150 mm). Green cloth, spine titles stamped in gilt, illustration stamped in gilt to upper cover, illustrated endpapers. One plate detached, leaves foxed, spine darkened and lightly chipped at ends, corners lightly worn. Plates clean, all captioned tissue guards present.

Tipped to the front free endpaper of this copy is an ALS of Rackham, 3 pp, August 25, 1910, to Frank Crowninshield, concerning a commission by The Century Magazine to illustrate the article "The Training of English Children" by Lady St. Helier. The editor caught Rackham between other assignments and he agreed to do no more than four drawings at "£30 each for the right of reproduction in the Century magazine--the original & the right of reproduction to remain mine." He continues to define his approach to illustration: "I have in mind tinted drawings of the kind that I make for my books--or they could be monochrome if you preferred it. I ought to say that my intimate knowledge of the subject is more or less confined to the entertainment & recreation of children rather their instruction. But short of anything that called for critical knowledge I have no doubt I know enough for the purpose. The illustrations might---as mine usually--accompany rather than illustrate the article. At present I am, staying at a small place on the Suffolk coast where there are numbers of delightful children holiday making, & I might find at least one subject here." For the June 1911 issue, he provided one watercolor "English Children at the Seashore" based on this visit.
