Footnotes

  • Mathias's works are uneasy: Large, glaring eyeballs reach out to you, asking or questioning? The bright, jovial colours and simplistic naïve figures could lead you to think Mathias speaks to you of joy and celebration but the colours are used unexpectedly: green faces, blue fruits, messy yellow tummies. Rough, energetic, chaotic brush strokes create a picture of both sides. Mathias speaks of the vibrancy of life and the underlying difficulties in his surroundings, the joys and strains of his society.

Like many Ugandan artists, Mathias began his career at one of the oldest East African schools, Makerere University, but unlike any, as a cleaner, not a student. Once the day was done Mathias collected the student's discarded paints, paper and sugar cane pulp and in the solitary of his work-room, converted the 'waste' into his own creations. This unusual career start underlines the artist's unique self-taught style and adds a further sense of curiosity and intrigue to a new upcoming success in the Ugandan Art scene.
