Footnotes

  • Jude Kateete grew up in the rural district of Mpigi during the 1981-86 civil war in Uganda.

Some of the profound memories of his childhood were the Tanzanian People's Defense Forces who had joined the struggle to liberate Uganda from the dictatorship of Idi Amin. The soldiers, called Abakombozi from Kiswahili meaning 'Liberators' used to jog in the mornings and evenings past Kateete's house. This imagery remains with Kateete as a symbol of hope in a war torn childhood.

Kateete's upbringing forms the backbone to his art. A style unusual to Uganda, Kateete uses strong, minimalist techniques. The blank, pale bodies could stand for an inner sense of calm reached by the artist or an invitation for the viewer to construct their own story from what Kateete has to offer. A surreal backdrop of yellow and blue plummets the scene into a dream like feeling, leaving us to question if the artist is drawing upon, understanding and reconciling his past through painting.

Kateete is an avid learner. He received quality education at St.Mary's College Kisubi (1988-1994) from where he joined Makerere University (1994-98), graduating in Fine Arts from The Margaret Trowell School of Industrial and Fine Art where he majored in Painting and Sculpture. He returned to Makerere University for a Masters degree in Art History (2005-07) before joining the global campaign to control arms, using his art as a messenger of world peace.
