Footnotes

  • After studying at the School of Sudanese Craftsmen in Bamako, Malick Sidibé soon opened his own studio in the heart of Bamako, at the epicentre of the social reformation that took place in the 50s and the 60s. Every youth wanted to have their portrait made by 'the Eye of Bamako', who would go from one party to the other, witnessing the generation shift, reporting on new dances and the new fashion brought in from Europe and Cuba, reflecting the happiness in the air.

Sidibé won the Hasselblad Award in 2003. He was awarded the Venice Biennale's Golden Lion for lifetime achievement award in 2007. This set is composed of five of Sidibé's most classic images, all of which have had other examples exhibited in prestigious institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum, MoMA, and the Studio Museum, Harlem.
