Footnotes

  • Ben Enwonwu has spent much of the latter half of the 1950s in England, working on his commissioned sculpture of Queen Elizabeth II. By 1959, the year in which Girls in waiting was painted, Nigeria was on the cusp of independence from Britain and positive energy prevailed. Girls in waiting may be viewed through this lens as a celebration of modern Nigerian women.
