Footnotes

  • Billy Waters, the 'King of the Beggars' was a well known London character. After losing a leg fighting in the British Army he supplemented his pension by playing his fiddle in the West End. With his peg leg, cocked hat and lively personality he attracted quite a following. He was immortalised in print in Pierce Egan's 'Tom and Jerry' in 1821, which although a fictionalised work documented many real life characters. He died in 1823.
