The dark yellow lacquer ground inlaid with colored stones to depict the two birds roosting on flowering wisteria hanging from gnarled vines of elaborately carved wood that continue as the frame around the panel, reversed by shiny black lacquer on the flat wood ground; patinated metal bail hanging device.

  • The panel is based on a pair of panels of slightly smaller size commissioned during the Qianlong period for the Yucuixuan. The panels were included in the exhibition The Emperor's Private Paradise: Treasures from the Forbidden City (Peabody Essex Museum, 2010), cat. no. 25, illustrated pp. 101-103, and pp. 222-223, listed as 30 x 49 1/4in (76 x 125cm) each.
