An archaic bronze wine vessel, Gu
Shang dynasty
The tall, slender vessel elegantly cast with four plantain volutes executed with rows of leiwen patterns tapering to a point below the strongly everted mouth under a recessed waist above a middle section cast with four vertical flanges repeated on the lower section and set off by raised bosses forming taotie masks heightened with paired horns and quills, the flared base cast with cicada patterns above complex taotie masks on a dense leiwen ground and covered with a pale green malachite patina, extending in heavy patches to the interior.
