A carved ivory set of seventeen of the Eighteen Luohan
Late Qing dynasty
Each realistically rendered in monastic dress and bearing an identifying implement, their heads individualized by lively and sometimes humorous expressions, with differing patterns of facial hair and scalp stubble; each supported on a waisted lotus-petal wood stand with tinted and reticulated ivory balustrade; together with an additional figure of a bearded scholar, perhaps the Tang dynasty poet Li Bo gazing joyfully at the moon, attired in loose fitting robes and long sash with hands clasped behind him .
