Impressive Patterned Shiva Lingam Stone
Narmada River, Central Highlands, India
Collected in the Narmada River by Hindus as sacred stones for over 4,000 years, lingams are seen as symbols of Shiva and are believed to impart powers of fertility. According to local legend, lingams were marked by a meteoric impact and, therefore, represent the union of heaven and earth. Magnificent viewing stones, Shiva Lingams may be used as natural indoor sculptures or as centerpieces in meditation gardens. The present lingam is a wonderful natural sculpture of impressive size; it has been laboriously polished to form, without the use of mechanized tools. Iron oxide contributes the attractive brown-red markings on composite quartz granite. The natural coloration of this particular one is striking: the distinctive red and brown pattern forms a natural figure-of-eight—the symbol for infinity.
Measures 37 x 18in
