SHACKLETON, ERNEST HENRY. Check Signed ("E.H. Shackleton") as Commander of the Imperial trans-Antarctic Expedition, 110 x 200 mm, London, July 1, 1914, drawn on Lloyds Bank account, for cash in the amount of £10 paid to the bearer Frank W. White, additionally signed by him as Secretary, inkstamps on recto and verso, small docket-hole at C of "Cash," teller's mark over signatures.
Provenance: the Shackleton Collection, presumably that of the Scott Polar Research Institute at Cambridge University (inkstamp at lower right recto).
The Endurance set sail in August 1914, but the loss of the ship to ice and other setbacks meant that it was not until May 1916 that Shackleton achieved his aim of crossing the Antarctic continent.
