Lot Details
Ludovic Steinmetz, Kiöbenhavn. A fine and very rare 19K gold open face double wheel duplex watch.
No. 28, the case with Copenhagen hallmarks for 1836
Highly unusual gilt movement with single curved and pierced train bridge, going barrel, platinum (?) balance with ruby endstone and compensation curb, index regulator, steel and brass paired escape wheels, key wound and set through the gilt cuvette, finely painted white enamel dial with numbered minute ring enclosing roman chapters, blued hands, subsidiary seconds, within a plain gold case, case, dial and movement signed. 51mm

Footnotes

  • A watch closely related in style and execution to the work of Frédéric Houriet and his student Urban Jurgensen who favored the double wheel duplex. The escapement employs separate concentric wheels for impulse and locking. In the early 19th century, it competed with the detent and lever for use in precision watches. However the escapement is easily deranged and proved unreliable.
