The movement stamped AB within a star, no. 309, last quarter 19th century
With leaf capped turned handle over shaped molded case with fluted columns to the corners, white enamel dial with roman chapters and blued hands within a pictorial metal mask depicting an Elizabethan townscape over scene of courtiers, one side panel depicting Romeo and Juliet at the balcony, the other, Othello and Desdemona, the movement with gilt lever platform, counterpoised right angle escapement with uncut bimetallic balance, striking the hour and half hour and repeating the hour on gong. 7 7/8 in. (20 cm) high

Footnotes

  • The trademark on the movement is that of the firm founded by Achille Brocot (1817 - 1878) whose innovations include the escapement, pendulum suspension and perpetual calendar that all bear his name. They were widely used in 19th century French clocks.
