Footnotes

  • Robert Robin (1741-1799). A talented and inventive clock and watch maker who counted among his clientele the French Royal Family. After the Revolution, he was given the task of making an inventory of the Royal clocks including the 23 belonging to Marie Antoinette. Among his many achievements is a watch escapement that bears his name. He produced a series of elegant precision mantel clocks with cases by the best bronziers and prized by collectors. Robin's work was of uniformly high quality. He held Royal appointments and yet became Horloger de la Republique in 1794.
