Footnotes

  • This Patek Philippe is fitted with a Beta 21 movement, the first quartz movement to be produced and sold. The Beta 21 was actually the fruit of a collaboration lasting from 1962 through 1969 among 20 leading Swiss watch brands including Patek Philippe and Rolex. The resulting movement was introduced at the 1970 Basel Fair, and was put into watches by various brands.

The Beta 21 is an electronic calibre, utilizing a quartz crystal with a natural oscillation rate of 8192 Hz which Patek reduced to 256 Hz by means of their proprietary frequency reducer. As a result, the seconds hand sweeps continuously rather than with the ticking of usual quartz movements. Because of its high cost, the Beta 21 was soon discontinued and very few watches were produced.
